Tips for living with roommates!

Moving away from home can be an intimidating experience as it is... but add moving into an apartment with 4-6 other people to the equation and living in your parents basement doesn't seem so bad!

At Bengal Creek we want you to have the best experience possible! So here are a few tips to keeping a happy apartment!

1. Be clear from the beginning!
-It's easy to upset someone if no one knows what is okay and what is not. Each time someone new moves into my apartment we all sit down and have a "roommate meeting". Not only does this help to break the ice, it also gives everyone the opportunity to set their boundaries and expectations for the apartment while they are living there. Occasionally you will run into someone whose expectations will be way too high, in this case you would try to compromise with them so that both parties can walk away satisfied. One semester I had a roommate who wanted everyone out of the living room by 11:00 every night (kinda unreasonable) so we compromised and made it so we could be in the living room for as long as we wanted, but to just be quiet after 11:00. BOOM everyone was happy! If nothing works then you can always contact your building CA! They are here to help!

2. Address things when they are little!
-If you let little things (like your roommate using your hand soap) slip by for too long then pretty soon you're going to find yourself exploding and your roommate has no idea what's wrong. It is way easier to bring up something little when you notice it becoming a nuisance, because 9 times out of 10 your roommate will have no idea that they are doing something wrong.

3. Respect your roommate's stuff!
-This one is HUGE, and it's the biggest cause of conflict within an apartment! The best thing you can do is never borrow, use, or take anything without asking permission first! And just because they said you could use their pan to cook one night, doesn't mean you can just grab it whenever.

4. Lock the doors and Windows!
-This tip seems like it has nothing to do with roommates but it's a good thing to remember! Although break-ins rarely if ever happen here, theft is a crime of opportunity! So make sure to keep everyone's belongings safe by locking the Apartment up.

5.You can be friends without being best friends!
-We have all heard both extremes when it comes to roommates... you either hate them or you become best friends forever! While both cases can happen it is good to remember that there is a medium. If you jump into the relationship expecting you both to be best friends automatically then it could actually lead to more complications down the road. Just keep in mind that while it may happen, it is also good to keep social circles outside of the apartment.

6. Be open minded and open to change!
-College is the time to experience new things and meet people from different backgrounds! If you keep an open mind to other people's lifestyles then you will become a well rounded, understanding person. And who knows, you might pick up one or two things about life along the way!

7.Don't let the big things fester!
-When there is a fight in the apartment and everyone knows it, it can cause a lot of contention in the atmosphere, not only making your day awkward, but everyone else's too. So always do your best to shove that white elephant out the door! If you feel like you've done everything you can, then talk to your building CA and see if they can't help or offer some advice.

8. If all else fails...Just follow the Golden Rule!
-Treat your roommate like you'd like to be treated. No matter what your relationship is at the end of the year, you can take comfort knowing you acted like an adult and treated your roommate with respect.

Moving out can be intimidating, but it also gives you the opportunity to meet new people and make memories that can last a lifetime!

Meet the Staff!!

Austin VanOrden!

My name is Austin! I was born and raised in Blackfoot, Idaho and I graduated from Snake River High School in 2012.
While I was there I played baseball and football and I still love playing both sports.
I came to Idaho State University in Fall of 2012 and am currently pursuing a degree in Biomedical Sciences with hopes of attending medical school in 3 more years. I want to graduate and become some sort of surgeon, but that's still undecided.
With the free time I have outside of school I like to do lots of things outdoors with my friends! Some of my favorite things to do are: Riding my dirtbike, going camping, fishing, hunting, boating, surfing, kayaking, snowboarding, and snow machining.
My friends are a huge part of my life and it just depends on what season it is, but my friends and I always have somthing to go do!

¡Ryan Olson!

Hey! I am Ryan Olson. I love the outdoors more than you...
If you were wondering. I rock climb, kayak, scuba dive, swim, bike, and have bon fires.
I do have indoor hobbies too! I like woodworking, I'm learning to weld and I read periodically.
One day I am going to try everything, but I think I'll start by finishing school and follow that up with touring a coast somewhere in the world on a tall ship just because I'll get to sail on a tall ship!

Alexis Stanley!

Hey guys! My name is Alexis, but my friends call me Lexi! I graduated from Idaho Falls High School in 2013, then packed up and moved to Pocatello to attend Idaho State University.
My major is Sociology with a certificate in Criminal Justice, I plan on using my degree to get into the FBI some day!
When I'm not working or in school (which is rare) I love to hang out with my friends doing anything from watching Netflix to soaking up the sun! I also love to read, draw, play my guitars, hike, camp, hunt, fish, and pretty much anything that involves the outdoors!

Brandon Bird!

I was born in Idaho Falls 25 years ago and since then I have lived all over Idaho, it just depended on where my dad was recieving the most buisness as a lawyer!
Out of 9 kids, I was the oldest and I love being a big brother! Growing up my family always went on camping trips and outdoor adventures, so of course one of my favorite things to do is go fishing with friends and family!
The biggest fish I caught was was a 34lb King Salmon on the Kenai Peninsula during a trip to Alaska.
One of my other passions is music. I love to write it and play it! I have been playing guitar for 9 years and I love to jam out with pretty much anyone!
Currently I am a student at ISU majoring in Pre-Law. I am looking to follow my Father's career, and become either a defence attorney, or practice corporate law.

Katie Carter!

My name is Katie and I am from Emmett Idaho. I graduted from high school in 2011 and decided to attend Idaho State University where I would major in Special Education and eventually get my masters in counseling. I am going on my third year and I have really enjoyed this school.
I plan to apply for my program this summer!
All throughout high school I was involved in Volleyball and Softball and also participated in several different clubs, one of which I was student body president!
I am currently on a softball intermural team here at ISU, and I absolutely love it.
I am the oldest of four kids; I have a brother and two sisters. I love the outdoors and meeting new people!
This is the main reason I became a CA at Bengal Creek!
Something that my family and I do every summer is go rafting! I love being on the water and going fishing!

READY TO MOVE TO COLLEGE?

Well the time to move to Bengal Creek Student Community is fast approaching. We hope all of you have been having an awesome summer. Here are a few things to remember:
  • Move in begins Wednesday, August 17th starting around 10AM. You are welcome to move in on that day or after.
  • Make sure you have turned in your lease agreement contract. It is very important to return this ASAP.
  • PAY YOUR FIRST PAYMENT by August 1st. All lease charges go out the first of every month. That is also when the payments are due.
  • You will have roommates. Understand that you all have responsibilities to take care of the apartment. We recommend having a roommate meeting sometime during the first week and establish some house rules (i.e. dishes, cleaning, guests, decorating, curfews, etc.).
  • Check out this list we found online...
Well we hope this will be helpful for you as you start to get ready to move into "Your Home Away From Home." Have a great rest of summer and we will see you soon!
